Our Philosophy
Margaret Fuller was a 19th-century American journalist and editor. At age six, she reads Latin; at twelve, she debates philosophy and mathematics with her father. When only fifteen, her daily routine includes practicing piano, reading in French and Italian, studying Thomas Brown’s philosophy, and learning Greek. A few years later, enamored with the German writer Goethe, Margaret teaches herself German and becomes a fluent translator within three months.“I am determined on distinction,” she writes at fifteen years old.
We, too, are determined on distinction. Margaret Fuller’s young life reflects the dedication and inspiration Walden Education aims to instill in young people. Her upbringing is a testament to our ability to cultivate knowledge from a young age. However, this philosophy — that children have the capacity for rigorous self-exploration and understanding — has slowly disappeared from our modern life. But its benefits can be seen across history: it once created young people passionate about learning and engaging with the world, better preparing them to lead fruitful lives into adulthood.
Walden Education seeks to fill this void, reintroducing students to the excitement and possibilities of academic exploration. By exposing students to a variety of subjects and stimulating a sense of wonder with the world, we hope to help them discover their passions while instilling foundational skills in critical thinking, writing and reading. Our standards are high both for ourselves and our students; such a challenge ensures success in their academic pursuits and develops a capacity for continual self-improvement.
Our essential goal is to give students the tools to learn on their own and to pursue their individual life-long journeys of discovery. Currently, we offer lesson plans for parents and teachers to implement in the classroom or in home education for students ages 10-18. We also provide academic insights and exploration on our blog, “The Pond.” We are in the process of developing online courses and reading groups for students of all ages.
Join us in revitalizing education.
